You may want something mixer like along the lines of a Mackie ProFX16v2 Since quality preamps will give you greater headroom when recording, a better signal to noise ratio, and just make your mics even sound more pristine, it's a real consideration. I've always liked Tascam for a lot of things, but mixers have not been a real strong suit with them. The preamps on the mackie are simply better quality than Tascam. Since you need the 8 in, 8 mic, that you were used to with the Phonic Helix, You may want to look into a Mackie 16x2, 4 buss mixer. Claims to have 16 inputs (8 preamp mic plus 8 separate line inputs) which is just what I need. I saw the TASCAM US-16x08 USB listed on Amazon for around $250.
